The Global Mindset survey 2011 conducted by Rogensi outlined some positive shifts in the mindset of employees across the world, however the report was mainly filled with doom and gloom about employee’s thoughts on the global economy. This year nonetheless, the survey asked some new interesting questions, one of which I’d like to share with you.

The question was – “What would get you to stay at your job even if the pay was lower?”

The respondents were given a free text field to answer. After some fancy analysis, their responses were grouped into five main clusters. These were as follows;

1. Growth and development

2. Career opportunities

3. Challenging and interesting work

4. Better work environment

5. Non-monetary benefits & recognition

This suggests that even with a reduction in pay, if organisations provide growth and development to their staff, they will still stay and furthermore be motivated. Similarly, there is a large percentage of people motivated by a better work environment, so leaders need to be expansive in searching for what drives individuals, and recognise that its not always the obvious.

The Harvard Business Review, one of the most prestigious sources of business best practice, has released several articles on emotional intelligence. Their article by psychologist and author Daniel Goleman ranks as their most requested article ever. This popularity led the HBR to re-examine the data on emotional intelligence… their conclusion:

“In hard times, the soft stuff often goes away. But emotional intelligence, it turns out, isn’t so soft. If emotional obliviousness jeopardizes your ability to perform, fend off aggressors, or be compassionate in a crisis, no amount of attention to the bottom line will protect your career. Emotional intelligence isn’t a luxury you can dispense with in tough times. It’s a basic tool that, deployed with finesse, is the key to professional success.”

I was chatting with a client today, who I helped with a dilemma he had. I will tell you the short version, as it may be of interest to you. Essentially, they were struggling being able to position themselves with the CEO as a worthy candidate for a promotion. They wanted the promotion, but they were struggling with how to ask the CEO to be considered for the role and to articulate exactly why they should get it without coming across as arrogant. The client kept thinking about the negatives – on why he would get knocked back and how this would impact his career prospects and his relationship with the CEO.

We worked together on a simple Visualization strategy. He focused on imagining what he would be doing, saying and feeling once he had been in the job he wanted for 12 months. We looked into the future and then we visualized all that he had achieved in the twelve months leading up to that time, to obtain the outcome. The client then felt positive knowing, how confident he felt and that he was sure he could actually achieve what needed to happen.

With this in mind and now thinking of the positive and feeling confident, he approached the CEO. He told him why he was going to be a great asset in the role, what he would achieve in 12 months in the role should he get it and how he would actually make that happen.

The process took no more than 15 minutes, but it made a huge difference to one persons career.

We provide a blend of breakthrough interventions which includes executive coaching, emotional intelligence coaching, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, psychometric assessment, consulting, training and mentoring. We select the best method appropriate in order to facilitate learning and change, which creates performance breakthroughs for our clients.

We offer one on one interventions, group interventions or Performance Breakthrough Challenges.

One on one interventions

We work with individuals to help them achieve their goals. We discover where they are now, what they want to achieve, and what needs to happen to allow them to achieve their goal. This includes one on one coaching, psychometric testing, performance review assessments, belief change using NLP, skills development, reading and homework – what ever needs to happen to enable the person to have the performance breakthroughs they need, in order to achieve the results they want. Flexibility and access to immense resources are the keys to success with one on one interventions.

Group Interventions

In your organisation you may find that some employees or managers are experiencing the same frustrations or blocks to performance. We design group interventions to overcome these challenges using an accelerated learning format. We offer a diagnostic assessment initially, then provide either a standard workshop or a workshop tailored for your specific requirements. As all learning depends on the participant’s interest and engagement, we accommodate all learning styles and encourage participation, responsiveness, experiential exercises, movement and celebration.

Performance Breakthrough Challenges

When training is coupled with coaching, transfer back to the work place is as much as 88%. (Int’l Personnel Management Association). We offer Performance Breakthrough Challenges to take advantage of this by combining group interventions with subsequent follow up via additional workshops or coaching. Each challenged is tailored to the needs of the organisational outcomes.

Breakthrough Challenges can look like this:

One / two days training, focusing on the desired result. Followed by three weekly 2 hourly training sessions. This provides deeper learning and further embeds the new behaviour, shares successes and focuses on the performance breakthroughs.

One / two days training focusing on the desired results. Followed by weekly coaching sessions for three weeks per participant. Coaching is either face to face, via the phone or Skype.

Different styles of interventions

There has been more research into human development and how we are able to create change in the last 10 years than in the previous 100 years. These exciting discoveries allow us to utilise a number of techniques to support our clients learning and development. To follow is an outline of each of the techniques utilised in our Breakthrough interventions.
